The Critical Care Fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center is a one-year ACGME-accredited program designed to equip specialists with the knowledge and skills required to manage the complexity, acuity, and severity of illness in critically ill patients

Upon successful completion, fellows are eligible to sit for the ABIM (American Board of Internal Medicine) Critical Care Medicine board exam.

This fellowship is an excellent opportunity for those with backgrounds in cardiology, nephrology, or infectious disease to expand their expertise and integrate critical care into their clinical practice.

As the largest not-for-profit health care system in Texas and one of the largest in the United States, Baylor Scott & White serves 41 counties through 53 hospitals, more than 1,300 access points, more than 7,100 active physicians, more than 59,000 team members and the Baylor Scott & White Health Plan.

Curriculum

Overview

Fellows will gain hands-on experience across various intensive care units at Baylor University Medical Center and our adjoining Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital – Dallas, including surgical/trauma, medical cardiac, cardiovascular, neuro, BMT, and medical ICUs. Additionally, fellows will work with mechanical circulatory support and our Platinum Designated ECMO program. BUMC is equipped with 124 critical care beds in total.

To ensure focused learning, each ICU unit features dedicated teaching hallways, limiting patient volume and allowing for a careful selection of complex cases. Faculty lead daily multi-disciplinary teaching rounds, providing bedside instruction, discussing pathophysiology, and incorporating current evidence into clinical decisions. Each team is limited to 15 patients, fostering a high-quality, individualized learning experience.
