A fellowship program for physicians who are interested in becoming board certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine
The Hospice & Palliative Medicine (HPM) Fellowship Program strives to provide exemplary multidisciplinary clinical care to seriously ill patients across the continuum of care, deliver effective educational programs and promote the well-being of providers, patients, families and communities.
The overall goal and objective of the hospice and palliative medicine fellowship is to provide significant experience in the diagnosis and ongoing management of adult and pediatric patients with serious illness across a variety of health care settings. Fellows gain experience with the daily management and provision of continuity care to patients with life-limiting illnesses alongside a multidisciplinary care teams assembled to meet the unique medical, spiritual, psychological and emotional quality of life wishes of the patient. Fellows serve as a valuable member of the patient's diverse care team, which also includes social workers, chaplains, family members, and specialists from a variety of medical specialties.
The Hospice and Palliative Care Fellowship opened as an ACGME Accredited program in 2021. The Fellowship enrolled its first two fellows July 2022. Fellows who successfully complete the program will be board certification eligible.

About the SPC team
The Supportive & Palliative Care (SPC) team at Baylor University Medical Center Dallas, part of Baylor Scott & White Healthcare System is a robust multidisciplinary team, serving both the inpatient and outpatient settings.
The inpatient team consists of a consult team that serves patients throughout the 914 licensed beds. The average number of inpatients seen by the SPC consult team is about 185 per month, and consults are received from a wide variety of medical specialties caring for hospitalized patients.
Our team is integrated into the care of advanced heart failure patients being evaluated for surgical advanced heart failure therapies and we collaborate closely with all intensive care teams (surgical, medical, neurological). Our fellowship program and institution also has both a strong oncology and transplant presence, with Texas Oncology originating on our campus and one of the most robust and advanced transplant programs in the nation (bone marrow, heart, lung, liver, kidney, pancreas, and uterus).
Fellows will round with board-certified/board-eligible, fellowship trained palliative medicine faculty on both the primary service and consult service during their training and have opportunities to learn alongside medical students, residents and fellows rotating with the team. Our unique "fellows as teachers" program equips fellows to develop and hone skills as early clinician-educators.
The multidisciplinary professionals composing the SPC team include: chaplains, licensed clinical social workers, child life specialists and advanced practice professionals (APPs, to include both APRNs and PAs).
How to apply
We use the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) to electronically accept fellowship applications, letters of recommendations, dean’s letters, transcripts and other credentials directly from your medical school.
Application eligibility and requirements
- Completion of an ACGME-accredited residency program, AOA- approved residency program, ACGME-I residency program, RCPSC or CFPC approved residency in Canada.
- Ability to provide verified ACGME, ACME-I or CanMEDS Milestone evaluations from the core residency program.
- Completion of a residency in one of the following specialties: child neurology, family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, or radiation oncology; or at least three clinical years in residency program in anesthesiology, emergency medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, radiology, or surgery.
- Complete ERAS application.
