What is an ulcer?

There are two common ulcers found in the digestive system: peptic ulcers and esophageal ulcers.

An esophageal ulcer is an open sore in the lining of the esophagus.

A peptic ulcer is a sore on the lining of your stomach or the first part of your small intestine.

Ulcer treatment

Treatment focuses on giving the ulcer time to heal, relieving symptoms and preventing further damage.

In most cases, medicines can heal ulcers quickly. In rare cases surgery may be needed if medicines don't help.

You may also need surgery if your ulcer causes other medical problems.
