Biography
Dr. Assar earned a B.S. degree in biomedical engineering science from the University of Texas at Austin. He then attended the University of California School of Medicine in San Francisco, where he received the Gold Headed Cane Award, the highest honor given by faculty and classmates to a student who exemplifies the qualities of a "true physician". He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He then went on to Duke University Medical Center for fellowship training in cardiovascular disease and one year of his cardiac electrophysiology fellowship. While at Duke, he was awarded the Walter L. Floyd Fellowship, given annually to a fellow for outstanding clinical skills, compassion and dedication to providing the highest quality patient care. He completed his second year of electrophysiology training at the University of Western Ontario. Dr. Assar is board-certified in cardiovascular disease and clinical cardiac electrophysiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. His professional interests include catheter ablation of complex arrhythmias, including supraventricular tachycardia and atrial fibrillation, and pacemaker and defibrillator therapy, including biventricular cardiac resynchronization. He also has an interest in laser-assisted lead extraction and evaluation of syncope and stroke of unknown cause. A member of the medical staff at Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital - Dallas since 2002, Dr. Assar is involved in medical education and research in addition to his clinical care practice. He has published several articles in cardiology journals, and he is an ad hoc reviewer for the American Journal of Cardiology. He currently serves as medical director of electrophysiology at Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Dallas, program director of the cardiac electrophysiology fellowship program at Baylor University Medical Center and clinical associate professor of medicine at Texas A&M College of Medicine.
