Biography
Themistoklis Kourkoumpetis MD, MPH, is a transplant hepatology physician specializing in the care of patients before and after liver transplantation, and focuses in the treatment of liver conditions such as cirrhosis, fatty liver, autoimmune conditions and alcohol-related liver disease. Before joining Baylor Scott & White's Liver Consultants of Texas - Fort Worth, Dr. Kourkoumpetis completed his advanced transplant hepatology training at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, where he received Northwestern University's Transplant Innovations Endowment Award. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology and Transplant Hepatology. A native of Greece, Dr. Kourkoumpetis earned his MD from the University of Athens in Greece. He went on to complete a research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School followed by his internal medicine residency training at Boston University. Dr. Kourkoumpetis then completed his gastroenterology training at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston where he also received a Master of Public Health at the University of Texas School of Public Health. Dr. Kourkoumpetis has published more than 40 peer-reviewed papers, national and international abstracts, and book chapters in liver disease and associated infectious diseases. He has a special interest in the role of nutrition in fatty liver disease and has created one of the first clinics in North America that focuses on helping patients with cirrhosis getting ready and build strength before transplant surgery.
