Your dedicated guide to navigate cancer care
At Baylor Scott & White, you don’t have to navigate a cancer diagnosis alone. You, your family and your caregivers have access to compassionate, specially trained nurses whose primary focus is guiding you on your journey.
Your nurse navigator is the champion of your care and a personal advocate. Their goal is to reduce fear and anxiety, remove barriers to care and improve communication among the multi-disciplinary team, ensuring you feel empowered and informed on your journey.
Nurse navigators can:
- Help with understanding your diagnosis and treatment options for informed decision making.
- Provide personalized education based on your preferred language and learning style.
- Assist with any barriers to care.
- Offer referrals to needed resources such as support groups, child life services and financial support.
Whether you're facing a suspicious finding, a new diagnosis or navigating through complex treatments, a nurse navigator is there to ensure you're informed about options for care, never alone, and always have someone to turn to for guidance and support.
How our nurse navigators can help support you
Through our Patient Navigation Program, nurse navigators are here to support you. They’ll help you, your family, and your caregivers manage the decisions, emotions and challenges that come with a cancer diagnosis. From your first visit, they’ll be a trusted resource to make your journey easier, so you can focus on healing.
A single point of contact
Between your primary care provider, oncologists, surgeons and other specialists, you will have many members of your care team working to ensure you receive effective care. Your nurse navigator serves as a single point of contact between you, your care team and any other specialists you may need.
Your nurse navigator also ensures you get the answers and support you need to continue receiving care. They can communicate your concerns about treatments or help you get assistance for treatment-related side effects from your doctors, a nutritionist or other team members. They can also coordinate services, such as transportation, to help you make it to your appointments.
Support for your family and caregivers
Your family and caregivers play an important role in your cancer journey. A nurse navigator is here not only to assist you but also to help those who are supporting you. They offer guidance to help them navigate their own challenges.
Here’s how nurse navigators support your loved ones:
Emotional support
They assist with education and resources for managing emotional distress, anxiety and caregiver burnout. They also assist with referrals to resources (such as licensed counselors) to help your family manage the emotional stress of your diagnosis and treatment.
